MediaTek announced that its MT3188, the industry-first multi-mode wireless charging integrated circuit (IC), is now commercially available to customers. The reference design, which includes the power electronics, supervisory circuit, and resonator has already passed three certifications including the A4WP, WPC and PMA standards groups. The mass production of this chipset makes MediaTek the first semiconductor company in the world to make multi-mode wireless charging chipsets available in devices for billions of consumers worldwide.
MT3188 is compatible with the A4WP resonant wireless charging standard as well as the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and Power Matters Alliance (PMA) inductive wireless charging standards with no increase in cost over single mode resonant solutions. By supporting multi-mode wireless charging, the MT3188 offers handset manufacturers and other device makers the ability to seamlessly charge their products from any of the mainstream chargers in the market, today.
Users of MT3188 based solutions experience the benefit of freedom of placement, inherent multiple device charging, and distance charging with the A4WP’s RezenceTM technology and the convenience of access to existing inductive chargers in the market.

This demonstrates our commitment to broadening the accessibility of quality technology for everyone in the world,” SR Tsai, General Manager of MediaTek's Wireless Connectivity and Networking Business Unit said. “The smart receiver resonator architecture not only simplifies design but also delivers a seamless user experience when charging devices across different pads. We recognized the need in the market and have delivered an efficient solution at speed.”
“Mediatek offers a path to speed up the wireless charger market development,” said Jerry Chi, president of Billion Digital Technology, well known as the brand of Kupiin. “Global standards are the reason the wireless charger market will ramp up, but the endless standards battle currently slows down the growth, and there is no sign these standards will be unified. MediaTek has provided a much-needed solution to ease customers’ pain points and simultaneously drive stronger growth in this area.”
MT3188’s multi-mode charging support is A4WP BSS 1.2 certified, Qi 1.1.2 certified and PMA 1.0 certified. The MT3188 is currently in mass production and will be adopted into products enabling multimode wireless charging – from smartphones and tablets to wearables.
